EPDM O-rings, otherwise known as ethylene propylene o-rings, are synthetic elastomers ideal in applications involving mild chemicals, acids, and solvents. They are exceptionally flexible and durable, making them a perfect material for various applications.

These applications involve door and window seals, cooling system hoses, non-slip coating decks, and more. Unlike ordinary rubber, EPDM rubber doesn’t become brittle when used in different ranges of temperatures. Instead, they stay flexible and can last for several years, even decades, in varying temperatures.

Are you looking for EPDM rubber O-rings online? We got you covered. Contact us, and we’ll guide you throughout your buying journey to ensure that suitable material is provided for your unique applications.

What are EPDM Rubber Rings?

EPDM rubber ring

EPDM rubber rings I’ve mentioned earlier are synthetic rubber that is both durable and flexible. The material contains both elastomeric properties and copolymer, and this means the material is elastic and gluey at the same time.

It contains two major components: propylene and ethylene. Needless to say, the material is a combination of natural gas and oil. EPDM rubber rings are assured of returning to their original shape when stretched. This makes them an ideal material for braking systems, water systems, food storage, and even pharmaceutical applications, to name a few.

Far and wide, EPDM rubber o-rings offer remarkable resistance from different elements like bases, acids, weathering, sunlight, cleaning agents, brake fluids, and more. Unfortunately, they offer poor resistance to standard fuels, alternative fuels, concentrated acids, kerosene, petroleum oils, aromatic hydrocarbons, and aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons.

What Applications Are Best Suited For EPDM Rubber Ring?

EPDM is a synthetic rubber that offers exceptional flexibility and durability, As a result, they are widely used in different applications. But first, what does EPDM means?

EPDM is an acronym for ethylene propylene diene monomer. While the term can be hard to remember, the material is referred commonly to as EPDM rubber. It got its name from monomer chemicals mixed in different proportions. Likewise, the ethylene content is about 45% to 75%.

This synthetic rubber is used in many ways thanks to its outstanding properties like high tensile strength and impressive resistance to tear. With that being said, this rubber material has unmatched resistance against the weather. This is why it’s also an ideal roofing material.

Likewise, EPDM rubber is also used for other beneficial applications such as:

  • Waterproofing of balconies, terraces, and facades
  • Solar and green roofings
  • Liners for water tanks
  • Green roofs
  • Pond liners, etc.

How EPDM Rubber Came Into Being?

Interestingly, this technology came into fruition thanks to the brilliance of German scientist Karl Ziegler. Together with his students, Ziegler developed the production process of EPDM rubber. Three years have passed and after 200 metric tons of the material produced, they worked together with the Montecatini Company and their consultant, Italian scientist, Giulio Natta.

In 1963, Giulio Natta and Karl Ziegler received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Their work on the process of controlled polymerization has been instrumental in developing plastics and their uses.

Moreover, EPDM was introduced in the United States in 1962. Since its introduction to the US market, it has been used by several industries, from hydraulic brake systems, HVAC units, eco-roofs, etc. This is because of the material’s ability to endure severe weather conditions and other thermal and mechanical factors.

What Color Does EPDM Rubber Ring Have?

Typically, EPDM rubber o-rings are available in black color. These rubber o-rings are famous for their remarkable resistance to weathering, sunlight, and ozone. They also work effectively in low-temperature applications with sufficient chemical resistance, including polar solvents, alkalis, and several dilute acids.

Furthermore, this material offers excellent electrical insulation and long shelf life. Regular EPDM rubber rings are sulfur-cured, which means they have enhanced flexible characteristics but are susceptible to hardening. Likewise, they are also seen as having poor compression when used in high-temperature applications.

On the other hand, EPRM rubber o-rings cured with peroxide have improved heat resistance with a low compression set. This means it can operate for extended periods. Often, these materials is used in hose systems for the construction industry. However, they are more expensive and often challenging to produce than their sulfur-cured counterpart.

Here’s the recommended temperature range for EPDM Rubber O-rings:

  • -55 degrees Celsius for the low temperature
  • 125 degrees Celsius for the high standard temperature

What Are The Benefits Of Using EPDM Rubber Ring?

There are several benefits to using EPDM rubber. They are highly suited for sub-zero working environments and have excellent weathering capabilities, including better resistance against ozone and sunlight. They also provide remarkable resistance against steam, abrasion, tear, and compression.

Limitation Of EPDM Rubber Ring

Unfortunately, there’s no perfect material and this is true for EPDM rubber. The material has been proven not suited against petroleum-based fuels, oils, and non-polar solvents. With that being said, they’re not recommended for applications in direct contact with petroleum and chemicals.

EPDM or NBR? Which is better?

EPDM is the material of choice for applications that involve steam, sunlight, ozone, and other solvents. Likewise, the material works with a wide range of temperatures. However, if the application involves fuels, NBR is a reliable material.

If you’re confused about which material is well suited for your specific application, don’t hesitate to contact us. Our team of experts will help you with everything there is to know about EPDM rubber rings and other sealing materials, for that matter.

Moreover, EPDM O-rings are commonly used for valves in water systems. This is not only because they are cheaper but they have all the necessary attributes that are best suited for this specific application. The durable synthetic rubber doesn’t deteriorate when exposed to sunlight and UV.

EPDM rubber is an excellent material. However, they are only effective when used in their designed application. With that said, make sure to remember what their limitation is and avoid using them. Just as mentioned before, they are poor against petroleum-based fuels and certain chemicals, Which is why it’s essential to seek the advice of professionals before you make the buying decision. This will ensure you have the best-suited material for your specific needs.
